Traffic Impact Studies

Traffic Impact Studies are conducted to assess the transportation impacts of proposed developments and other land use changes. The proposed development could be a new office building, subdivision, factory or shopping center. Proposed changes in land use might include the redevelopment of an existing area into an area that includes a mix of uses. These studies evaluate changes in traffic attributable to the proposed development or land use revisions and translate them into transportation impacts.

Often traffic impact studies are conducted within the context of a larger environmental report such as an Environmental Assessment (EA), Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW), or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Intersection and Driveway Studies

Intersection and driveway studies are conducted to determine the type of control needed and whether traffic signals are warranted, the intersection capacity, traffic signal timing, site development impacts, safe speeds, and other important parameters such as the adequacy of available sight distance.

General Parking & Shared-Use Parking Studies

Parking studies are typically conducted to check the physical needs for revising or increasing the existing parking supply and location. Parking Studies can also be performed for proposed developments. Current trends in development offer opportunities for shared-use parking. A shared-use parking study can optimize the proposed parking and potentially reduce the cost associated with excessive parking supply.

Traffic Accident Studies

Traffic accident studies can be performed for segments of roadways and highways, but are typically focused on isolated locations. Acquired agency accident data is evaluated and accident patterns are identified. Countermeasures are then identified and evaluated.

Review of Traffic Studies by Others

Experience and knowledge allow for a comprehensive review of traffic studies completed by other entities. Review of gathered field data, traffic forecast methodology, analysis, and recommendations can be insightful and aid in confident agency decision making.
